The Haunting of Hill House has been renewed by Netflix with new title
If you have seen “The Haunting of Hill House” on Netflix you may be surprised to hear that a second season is in the making: the first season wrapped up the story of Hill House and didn’t leave much in the way of continuation. However, the new season will be a fresh new story, with fresh new characters, and is titled “The Haunting of Bly Manor”.
For those who haven’t seen the first installment, “The Haunting of Hill House” tells the story of the Crain family, who move in to a beautiful house which once belonged to the Hill family. Slowly we get to see that not all is as it seems with the house, and it starts playing tricks on each one of the Crain family, some being more receptive of it than others.
The series flits between two timelines (one from when the Crain family first move in to the house, and one from years later when the children are all grown up and living separate lives) and slowly unravels the events which have haunted the Crain family since they first set foot in the house.
Without giving too much away, there are a LOT of ghosts in this show, but the majority are very subtle and if you weren’t paying too much attention you’d probably miss them. However, there are a few that are very much the heart of the show, each one with its own motive and desire.
The show ended with what could be perceived as a cliffhanger, depending on your view point, but I’d like to think it was all wrapped up, and given that the next series will be centered around Bly Manor, I think the writers agree.
Mike Flanagan, the director of the series said “As far as I’ve ever been concerned with this, the story of the Crain family is told. It’s done. I felt like the Crains have been through enough, and we left them exactly as we all wanted to remember them, those of us who worked on it. We toyed with a cliffhanger ending and we toyed with other ideas, but ultimately, in the writers’ room and with the cast and everything else, we really felt like the story demanded a certain kind of closure from us and we were happy to close the book on that family.”
Now that we know the next installment will be centered around Bly Manor it’ll be interesting to see if the two timeline mechanic will be used or if it will try a different direction. It will be a shame not to see the Crain family again, but I’m looking forward to seeing the new characters and what could potentially haunt them.
